Śrīla Prabhupāda, A Global Spiritual Pioneer
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda (1896–1977), revered as Śrīla Prabhupāda, was a distinguished teacher of Bhakti yoga and the founder of the International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness (ISKCON). Driven by profound compassion and the guidance of his spiritual teacher, Śrīla Prabhupāda embarked on a mission to share the science of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness worldwide. At the age of 70, he left India for America, arriving in New York City in 1965 with minimal possessions—a suitcase, an umbrella, dry cereal, a small sum of money, and a collection of spiritual texts—yet an unwavering determination to spread Lord Kṛṣṇa's message.
Despite enduring significant challenges, including two heart attacks during his transatlantic journey on the cargo ship Jaladuta, Śrīla Prabhupāda's resolve remained steadfast. Settling in New York’s Lower East Side, a hub of the 1960s counterculture, he began teaching Vedic philosophy, attracting a diverse audience drawn to Eastern spirituality. In 1966, he established ISKCON in a modest storefront, laying the foundation for a global movement. His teachings resonated widely, gaining followers in cities like Montreal, San Francisco, London, and Berlin, and earning support from notable figures such as George Harrison, Allen Ginsberg, and members of the Grateful Dead.
A Legacy of Devotion and Scholarship
Undeterred by age or health, Śrīla Prabhupāda traveled the world 12 times in 11 years, wrote and translated 84 books on Bhakti yoga, and delivered countless lectures. Sleeping only two hours nightly, he dedicated his life to sharing Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, personally guiding thousands toward devotion to Lord Kṛṣṇa. His teachings emphasized a life of purity, devotion, and service, inspiring millions to embrace Kṛṣṇa Consciousness for spiritual fulfillment and a return to the divine realm. Śrīla Prabhupāda departed this world in 1977, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to transform lives and shape spiritual history.
